OFF LIMITS

Before creating this work, I encountered Mitsu Ishii’s photo book Yakasuka Story, which sparked my interest in Yokosuka. I began researching the area’s historical landscapes, focusing on a lively street adjacent to a U.S. military base, once a red-light district. During site visits, I noticed “off-limits” signs still posted in residential areas, relics of past restrictions. Observing the space and imagining the lives of women who lived there, I filmed the main street, side alleys, and views from a pedestrian bridge overlooking the base. In the video, I repeatedly move my mouth saying “off-limits,” but no voice is heard, reflecting how the authority of these words has dissipated over time. The silent mouth movements highlight the lingering injustice embedded in everyday life, while my presence asserts a reclaiming of the word through an Asian woman’s body. Viewers confront both the broken signs and their historical implications, bridging past and present experiences.
